The Actor Works offers a range of daytime and evening acting courses designed for acting
students at different levels of drama training.
The One Year Intensive Evening and Weekend Course is a vocational course for those wishing to train for the profession, whilst maintaining a day job; anyone
looking to hone their skills or those wanted to return to the business.
The One Year Part Time Evening Course is for people considering drama training, or anyone who would like to pursue acting as a leisure interest.
The Foundation Course is a 15 week part time course for younger students looking for support through the process of auditioning
for accredited drama schools. This course runs three times a week during the day.
We also run Saturday Classes for complete beginners.
The school is dedicated to offering a thorough and comprehensive drama training in a supportive
and friendly environment. As well as this, we value the importance of training all our students for life as an actor beyond
the performing itself. As wonderful and rewarding as it can be, we believe our students need to enter the business as aware
of work that needs to go into making a success of their career.
We believe that fame is an occupational hazard,
rather than a goal at our drama school, so, if you want to be a ‘star’ please look elsewhere. We are not for you.
However, if you want to become a hard-working, easy-going company member, then do contact us.
The Actor
Works is the only school in the country that cites the teachings of late American acting practitioner, Viola Spolin, as its major influence on our ethos and training. We are not a ‘method’ school and – though we reference
the work of all major acting practitioners – we avoid the sometimes proscriptive systems of perhaps the more famous
names in favour of the more nurturing (though no less vigorous) Spolin ideal.
Please take a look at the site and
do not hestitate to contact us should you have any questions.
Mission Statement
We believe that a good actor is one who is: - Prepared for the reality of the business – the harsher aspects as well as the rewards
- Able to work well as part of a company
- Willing to try their hand at anything; acting work comes in all forms
and sizes and there is reward to be gained from every opportunity.
- Disciplined, focused and open to new ideas
- Generous, thoughtful and considerate
- Ready to work hard
- Ready to enjoy his or her self. They’re called plays, after all!

We teach that, even in this digital age, theatre has an important role in society. We train our actors to maintain
a healthy respect for the theatre as an equal partner, alongside television, film, radio and the internet.
Individual
attention for each of our students is key, therefore our class sizes are kept small.
We understand the pressure of being an actor in training. Making
oneself physically, emotionally and mental available can take its toll. This is why we provide a full student welfare programme
at no cost. Drop in sessions are held every week, as well as a full counselling service provided by Jo Condon (Advanced Diploma
in Integrative Counselling Level 4).
Acting is for everyone and our training
reflects this. We welcome students regardless of colour, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, religious affiliation, physical
ability or mental health issues.
